Where did the phrase

Question: I mean, why do "they" get to be called the finest? What about fire fighters? Military? Mail Carriers? Etc. You get the point. Gonzo: Actually I was just curious about it, but go ahead and assume the worst from people. From the sound of your answer, it appears to me that that's your attitude. Just remember THAT!

Answer: The New York City Police Department has been called "New York's Finest" for years. The Fire Department of New York is known as New York's Bravest, and the Emergency Medical Technicians (in NYC the EMT's are employed by the Fire Department) are known as New York's Best. This is an old nickname... it's been in use for as long as I can remember, and I even vaguely remember seeing an 1899 newspaper that used the nickname New York's Finest. The term "America's Finest" obviously grew out of the New York City nickname.
